Why do you need a website? Professional Email Address

There is nothing like receiving an email from a business or other professional using a GMAIL, Yahoo, AOL or Outlook account. It just screams unprofessional, cheap or SPAM. With all the competition out there and the time and money spent building a brand or name for yourself why use a free email service and destroy everything you are trying to do?

Another problem with the ‘free’ email addresses is a lot of mail servers will automatically put them into the SPAM folder. You work to get these email addresses so that you can communicate with your customers, you don’t want to have the message trashed before the customer even gets to read it. I get about 100 emails a day that go automatically into the trash. Although I do take time to skim over them to make sure I don’t miss anything important, it is just a skimming of the trash folder. Your email could easily get lost if you have a free email address.

Professional email addresses are part of just about every website hosting package. Some lower cost plans will limit you to maybe 10 addresses or so, but even that is better than a free address.

Size matters to your customer. They want to deal with a local business but they also want to know that they can get a response to their questions and help when they need it. Using multiple email addresses improves your image. You can have one address for sales, one for service, one for customer support, one for technical help etc. They can all be answered by the same person, but to the customer they look like a much bigger organization, which means instant trust.

Why do you need a website? Yellow-pages

Why do you need a website? Yellow-pages
If you have been around for a while you may remember that we actually had telephones in our homes and each year we would receive THE phone book. It contained all the names, addresses and phone numbers of the people that lived in our area. In addition, it contained the Yellow Pages or business section. Here every business could advertise their services or products in hopes that people would find them when they were looking for something. Today that phone book is all but gone. People use the Internet now to find products or services they are looking for. If you don’t have a website, your business won’t be found when they are looking for the products or services you are selling.

But the website is much more than a 1 column inch ad. Here you can describe exactly what you are selling. Adding details that might help the customer make up their mind to call you. You can put pages and pages of content on your website that help educate and drive that customer to take some sort of action whether it is filling out a form, making a phone call or sending an email to you requesting more information, a service or help. Your website also gives you the power to up-sell or offer more than you can in a print ad.

In today’s business environment, we need to do everything we can to reach our customers and keep reaching out to them.  Posting articles like this one, while educational, it could not be done using the old Yellow-pages.

Why do you need a website? Income

For many people income is the primary reason to have a website and it is an important consideration.  Years ago one of the business courses I took talked about multiple streams of income for families and businesses.  With multiple income streams when one goes down, it is not as drastic an impact with other income available.  Your website can be another source of income or two.  The big source of income naturally is going to be any products you might sell.  Even if you are a service business you probably have some products available that you sell to customers.  To sell products your website has to have the software to handle those transactions.  That software is called ecommerce software.  There are many free packages available that will help you create a store as part of your website.

The second stream of income is from advertising on your website.  By placing ads from other businesses you can create a nice additional income stream.  Don’t think this is for you?  Look at the money Facebook is making without selling any products or services.  All of it is made from advertising.  Granted, you will need to have a lot of traffic, but if you build it they will come.

With a website and online store your customer base just expanded drastically!  You now have over 279 Million potential customers.  This can be a major source of income once you have the community building up and people coming to your website.

Why do you need a website? Community

What makes Facebook so big and popular?  Did you know that over 1 BILLION people log onto Facebook every day!  Why?  Part of the reason is they are part of an online community with something in common.  That is the reason so many groups exist.  There is probably a group for any topic you can think of and more than likely more than one.  So how does that help you?  If you have a way for people to learn about a topic and get the information they are looking for they will come to you.  One way to do that is to offer information in the form of articles and postings that you think people can use.  Over time those articles will be indexed by the search engines and people will read them.  As
more articles are written more people will find them and more people will join your website and start building a community.

But how does that help you?  There are several ways this helps your business.  First you can reach these people via other articles and offer your expertise and services.  As people have unique problems in your area of expertise they will ask questions and you can follow up with simple answer and an offer to correct the problem.  Next, they get to trust you more as you answer questions and help others, you become the go to business when they need help. Third you get the chance to gather their contact information which allows you to contact them anytime you want.  Remember it takes 7 contacts before they will become a customer.  So having a community increases your chances of gaining people as customers.

So, how can you build a community on your website?  First you need to have a software package that allows you and your potential customers to interact.  There are many such programs available.  At RD-Webhosting we have many different types from a forum to a Facebook type format.  I like JCow which is in the format of Facebook so there is no learning curve. Forums have been around for decades and they were the first social interaction platform that was available.

Why do you need a website? Image

Why do you need a website? Image

Now a days everyone is on the web and if you don’t have a website they won’t find you. Your website is your store, your online business card and your public image. A clean good looking website presents a professional image. A poorly designed, plain text website like a sheet of paper will just as likely be ignored and the customer will move onto someone else. I recently had that very same experience. I was looking for a mail forwarding business in FL. I found a dozen or more. One of the ones that was on the list was a company in Sarasota. I took one look and disregarded it as unprofessional and went on to the other sites. Later I revisited the site because of other requirements that meant starting my search over again. This time, those requirements meant that I HAD to check the company out further. In the end we used this company, but had it not been for a second change they would not have my business. Without a website your business is not even getting a chance at all. Your image just doesn’t exist.

I want to help. At RD-Webhosting.com we do things a little different from GoDaddy, 1in1 and the others. First we have over 350 applications and hundreds of templates that can be used to create your website. Everything from beautiful landing pages to full fledged eCommerce websites. Second, we assign you a Personal Assistant that will help you by installing the website software and doing the basic configuration. Third, we are one of a few web hosting companies that actually allow you to decide what features and how much you need. No taking what they offer, unless you want to. Fourth, every account that pays annually gets their domain name registration free of charge. That is a savings of $15 or more. Next we automatically back up your website every week. This ensures that your site is able to be restored if hackers or something else were to happen. Finally, we have free video training that will help you learn how to get the most out of your website.

Why do you need a website? Communications.

According to Business Insider it takes about 7 contacts before a new customer is willing to buy from you.  That means that they have to see your name and product over and over again either from advertising or promotion of some sort.  Yes, you can buy advertising and paste your product on bill boards, newspapers, magazines.  You can put ads on Facebook, Yahoo, Google and a multitude of other sites.  You can write promotional pieces and have them plastered all over the web. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY!

But what if you had the personal contact with these new customers that you could contact them at will without spending a lot of money?  How fast would your business grow?  How much would you be able to make if the new customers become paying customers?

In the USA 86% of all households are on the Internet.  That is 279,834,232 people according to Internetlivestats.com.  They spend on average 66 hours per month surfing the web.  You need to be where they are.  You also need to be able to touch them when ever you want, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and they need to be able to touch you as well.  This is were a website comes in.  A website is your store that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with employees that never sleep and work for basically nothing.  What can a website do for your business?  First it is a salesman that doesn’t get paid for sales or promoting your business.  When a new customer wants to learn about you or your product, your website is available to explain in detail everything the customer needs to know.  Second, the website allows you to collect information about your customer and keep in contact with them when you have a sale, new product or service or some interesting information to share. Third, the website is a store that is open 24 hours a day without paying rent or commissions to anyone.  Finally, the website is your store front, yellow page and advertising without the costs.

Now, I know you think that having a website is expensive, time consuming and requires a lot of knowledge that you don’t have and time you don’t have to learn it.  What if you could get a website where the technical aspects were handled for you.  Your website name (domain name), website software and configuration were automatically installed and basic configuration were done for you.  No learning curve or technical knowledge needed.  What if you had a personal consultant that you can email at any time to ask questions and he/she were familiar with your site and business?  What if the website had all the software you needed to have an online store, newsletter and automated content distribution network all ready for you to use from day one and all you had to do was tell it when and what to send or sell.  Finally, what if you could have all of this for $7 per day?

If this is something that interests you, please email us at sales@rd-webhosting.com or call us at 302-990-2564 and leave a message for a personal assistant to contact you.  RD-Webhosting.com is the only web hosting company to assigns you a personal assistant that will help you from start to finish, free of charge.  They will register your domain name, install the website and perform the basic configuration information for the site.  From there you can use our video training and the web to get the background you need to use your website.  The website will collect the customers information so you can contact them via email or newsletter when ever you want.  You can even set this up to happen automatically.  Contact us today to get started!  There are over 279 Million new customers out there waiting to buy your products or services.  At $7 a day it will be the best business decision you can make.

Word Press for RVers, Part 3

In the first two articles, I talked about creating a post and a page.  In this article I want to talke about posting pictures.  The actual process is pretty simple, but before I get there I want to talk about some changes to make before you load the pictures.

When you create a digital picture it is a bunch of little dots called pixels that are color coded.  There are millions of pixels and each one is represented by a number.  These numbers are the data that you will be sending to the website so that the computer of your friends and family can understand them and recreate the image that you transferred to the Internet.

When you take a picture with a digital camera or your cell phone each picture is millions of these little pixels and that takes millions of bytes (computer data) to represent.  All this data takes time to transfer to the Internet and from the Internet for your friends and family.  If you or they are on a cell phone plan that means it is very costly as well.  There is another thing that you want to be aware of.  Your Internet browser can’t display all of that data.  It is limited to just 300 dots/pixels per inch.

So what can we do about this.  How can we speed up the process and reduce the cost of viewing pictures?  We start with the good old Paint program that comes with Windows.  Right click on an image and select edit. This will open Paint and the picture.  Now the image may be off the screen but don’t worry, we are going to fix that.  In the upper left hand corner of Paint you will find the word RESIZE.  Click on it.  Now click on the Pixels option.  The numbers will change for Horizontal and Vertical. Click on the largest number and type in 600.  Your picture is now 600 pixels in that direction.  We have changed the size of the image.  This will reduce the amount of data required and also make the image a good size for the Internet.  We have not changed the number of colors or the detail by have simply resized the photo.  By resizing it we save data and improve the transfer process.

Now we need to save the image.  Do NOT simply save the image, it will update the one on your computer and will resize it.  Choose File, Save As, PNG.  Give the image a new name and click save.  I usually use the name and put small or 600 after it.  This lets me know that I have resized the image.

Now we are ready to upload the photo to our website or even Facebook if you want.
Connect to the wp-admin page of your website and log in.  You will be at the Dashboard page.  On the left hand side of the page you will see Media.  Click on it.  All of the images (if you have any) that are available will be displayed.  At the top of the page next to the words Media Library is an Add New button.  Click on it.  A new box opens under it telling you to either drop the images here or click upload.  You can simply open your file manager, find the photo, click and hold the mouse key down and then drag it to this box or click on the upload button and find the file and click on it.  Your image is now ready to be used in your next post or page.

Remember, RD-Webhosting.com offers WordPress websites installed free of charge with a free domain name for only $36 per year when paid annually.  You will also have one of our Personal Assistance to help you via email or text while you host with us.

WordPress for RVers, Part 2

Word Press is an extremely powerful application. There are so many things that it can do by itself and it is also a program that has hundreds of programs that extend it capabilities. You can make a photo gallery, an eCommerce site, a book club, travel guide, interactive studio, just about anything you want can be done with WordPress.

This article is going to continue our administrator tour of WordPress. In the first article we logged in, wrote and published a post. I want to discuss the differences of post versus pages. When you write information or articles on WordPress, you have the option of selecting a post or a page. Post as you have seen are quick and easy. When you ‘post’ them they are displays chronologically and will continue to slide down the page as they get older and new post are added. Eventually, they will no longer be displayed and will be archived based on the date they were written. A page is permanent. When you create a page, it will be displayed on the site menu system and is always available. Pages are used for information that you want people to find easily. Perhaps things like the About You or your store or where you are page. You might even create pages for your photo album.

The next type of post you can have is a media post. Media allows you to post picture or videos on your website. This is actually an extension of either a post or a page. Basically, when you are creating a post you can insert into that post/page video or pictures. But before you can insert them you have to load them onto your website. That is where the media section of WordPress comes into play. When you select Media, WordPress shows you all of the images and video that it currently knows about. To load a new picture or video into WordPress you select Add New and WordPress will guide you through the process of finding, uploading and making minor changes to the image, then inserting into your article.

The last part for this week article will be others people writing on your blog. These are called comments. Comments are both good and bad. Friends and Family comments are good. Strangers comments can be really bad and worse that SPAM. For the most part I do not allow comments to be posted or approved automatically, saving them for review and approval. Some of my websites, I do not even allow any comments. Your site will be set up with not allowing comments to be posted automatically and I will guide you via newsetters or email on the management of these comments.

Well that is it for this week. Next week we will start on the Appearance of your website. Changing the look and feel so it is more to your desires.

Remember, RD-Webhosting.com offers websites for only $36 a year complete with domain name and WordPress installed and configured ready to go. You also get a personal consultant to help you when ever needed.

Please comment and let me know what you think of these articles and whether or not they are useful and if you understand or have questions about the topic.

Until next weekend, thanks.

WordPress for RVers, Part 1

Ok, you have probably heard of blogging, but just in case, blogging is writing about anything and putting it on the world wide web for people to read.  For those of us use to the old newspaper days, think of it as an editorial or guess writer column in the newspaper. The only real difference is you own the newspaper!  To start blogging you need to have a place to put the articles you write so people can read them.  This is called a blog and the blog is made up of post or articles that you and others write.

There are lots of software packages that you can use to create a blog.  Why do you need software?  Well, you have to have a website and the website has to be hosted on a server, which is a computer that is connected to the Internet full time.  Your website has to have a name and an address as well.  Think of it like your house.  A physical place with a physical address so people can find you.  A website is the Internet Place and the name is the Internet Address so people can find you. The software tells the computer what to do when someone comes to your website or Internet house.  WordPress is the software that is used my millions of people to create the house that displays the writings of those people.

So, we need a website, software, a server so people can find out about our writing.  Sounds really complicated, but that is why I am here. I will take care of all of that stuff for you.  Your job will be to tell me what you want. Don’t worry, I will guide you along as well.  Oh you are probably wondering what this software is going to cost you, nothing!  That is right, WordPress is free, which is one of the reasons I use it on all of my personal websites.

So with everything set up the next step is to start writing.  For this you will need to know a little bit about WordPress.  We are going to start with some basics.  You will need a username and password to get into the administration side of WordPress.  I should have sent you an email with that information.  You will type into your web browser the address of your blog and the location of the WordPress administration page.  It will look like www.yourblogname.com/wp-admin.  The website will ask for your username and password which you can get from the email.

Now you are ready to write your first article.  I did some cleaning up of WordPress when I installed it.  So all you have to do is determine if you want to use a Post or a Page.  The next article will talk about them in detail.  For now I think we will use a post.  On the left hand side of the screen you should see the word Posts with a little pin symbol next to it.  Click on the word Posts.  This page will show you all of the posts that have been made on your website.  Currently there are none.  At the top of the screen next to the word Posts is a button called Add New.  Click on it.

You are now at the Add New Post page.  This is where you will write your first post.  For a title enter, Welcome to my new blog. Now click in the big empty box, this is were you type in the body of your post.  Introduce yourself and let people know what you are doing.  When you are all done, on the right hand side of the screen is a button call Publish.  Click it and your first post is on your website.

RD-Webhosting.com has been around since 1997. We have changed our focus from small business to you, the recreational user.  We found that most people don’t understand how to setup a website or all the different things that can be done with one.  With the right tools and focus you can even make money with your website.  We wanted to be part of that.  So with this new focus, you will find we are trying to make your life a little easier. All of our website now offer a free domain name (your internet address), so you don’t need to worry about that part of having a website.  Your domain name can be anything you want, if it is available.  We would recommend your name or something that is easy for people to find when looking for you.  Next, everyone who host (has their website) with us will have their own personal consultant to help them when needed.  You can email, text or even chat with them.  Your Personal Consultant will install and do basic configuration on any of the software we make available free of charge.  No need for you to learn how to install software on a real server. Finally, we hope you will find our prices fair.  Our basic package is only $36 a year to get your own domain, web hosting, software and Personal Consultant.  Please take a minute to like our Facebook Page and to visit our website.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

Next in the series will be the Admin Menu and setting up categories for your articles so people can quickly find posts that are of interest to them.
